Writers' Advice : Editing

Thu Sep 14, 2017, 8:58 PM

So the writer who breeds more words than he needs, is making a chore for the reader who reads. – Dr. Suess.

One of the more common questions that I have come across is how do you edit? As a writer, this is one step in the process that you cannot afford to skip.

The editing process takes place in several steps, and it does involve re-reading the manuscript multiple times. Each time, there is a different focus. This article is a barebones guide on how to edit your piece of work. It does not include sending it to a professional proofreader, but I highly encourage that you do so.

There is a couple of universal steps to editing. They do not have to be done in order, but I find most people usually do.

Take a Break

This suggestion is a luxury that some of us do not have. Many of us are on a deadline as we are publishing trilogies and series. I found if I place some distance between the time that I finished my first draft and the time that I started to work on my second draft, I am more likely to find my mistakes. I look at it with fresh eyes.

When I went and edited Undercover Desire, there was a two-month span between when I finished the manuscript and when I took up my proverbial red pen. Are two months too long? Don’t fret. Even a simple jaunt to the restroom or kitchen would be acceptable.

Re-read Your Work
I know. You think that you just wrote a masterpiece in one sitting and that there is nothing to improve. I think that maybe all authors have some form of hubris. They believe that their work is better than the book that is next to theirs.

Despite what anyone thinks, there is always room for improvement. To start, you must re-read your work. The most common form of this is to print it out. The writer will read it over and take a red pen to it as he or she marks his or her mistakes or adds notes in the margins.

However, that is not the only method. For example, I use a text to speech program. I find that if I hear it out loud than I can determine if something needs to change. There is no right and wrong way of re-reading your manuscript as long as you get it done.

Writers' Advice : Writers' Block

Wed Sep 13, 2017, 2:13 PM

Who is more to be pited, a writer bound and gagged by a policemen or one living in perfect freedom who has nothing more to say? –Kurt Vonnegut

I think that writer’s block happens when you are not confident in yourself or perhaps the story. There are several reasons that this might occur. If you get several “bad” reviews in a row or you just don’t know what happens next in your novel. During those times, your self-confidence goes down, and as a result, your thoughts will create a block.

As I said in answer to a Goodreads’ question, a writer will have to push through the block. What does that mean? Simply put. A writer should not give up on that part of the manuscript.

Write a sentence.

When a writer is stuck on a scene, they should write down something. There are quite a few times that the first sentence will inspire the author, allowing him or her to continue with the work.

Take notes on the scene.

Alright, so a writer tried to write that first sentence, and the words are still not coming to him or her? If this is the case, continue to work on the scene, but instead of writing a sentence, take notes. For example, in the upcoming short story: Naked Desire, there is a scene where Anthony and Kelly are fighting. If I had to take notes, I would start with why are the fighting? Then, I would go on from there as just thinking about the situation and placing the notes in a program or on paper will allow me to work on the novel still.

Writers' Advice : Outlines

Fri Sep 1, 2017, 3:54 PM

Some people like to figure everything that happens in the whole book. There are some who just write, not knowing what is going to happen. I would think that it is a mix of both for most writers.

When I start a novel, what do I do? I create an outline. When I wrote the first draft of a dark fantasy novel that I am hoping to have published under my real name, my cowriter and I did a sort of free form writing. We had a glitch with our writing software, and the entire manuscript was lost. When we went to rewrite it, we found ourselves lost.

Outline of Undercover Desire

As a direct result, we decided to create an outline that details the Chapter and scenes. Since then, whenever I write, I outline what will happen in each chapter and scenes.

We find the structured form of an outline helps us to keep track of all plot lines in a series, and of course, this diminishes the chance of plot holes for us.

Naked Desire - Excerpt

Fri Sep 1, 2017, 2:23 AM
Book Cover Design - Naked Desire by NewYorkNovelist

“This better work, Gringo,” Manny Alvarez growled as he looked at his slim, wiry companion, Darrel, a fellow inmate in FCC Beaumont. After he had jabbed the other man in the ribs to punctuate his demand, Manny looked around him and tried not to seem out of place.

Although they had found a corner of the prison that did not have cameras or the guards watching over it, the cold concrete walls of the prison still towered over them, reminding both men of the stark reality of their bleak situation. Some would view their situation as hopeless, and when he first arrived there, he felt the same, but over time, he had made a realization.

Manny had never gotten used to life in federal prison, the rules and regulations had often gotten under his skin, but despite what others had deemed his mental illnesses, he had always considered himself to be an intelligent man. To pull off the cover-ups, the complexity of the murders, and the drug running that he did, for as long as he did, he had to be. Like a chameleon, Manny knew to survive amongst the inmates and prison guards that he had to change his way of thinking on a case by case basis. With that in mind, he decided to take the Federal Prosecutor’s deal in exchange for his life.

With his change in attitude about cooperation with the authorities came certain amenities: a comfortable bed, a pair of high-end sneakers, and rich foods. He did not have to worry about the jury sentencing him to death for the murder of the Senator, sex trafficking, and the kidnappings that he had committed in his time out of prison, and over time, he had gained the trust of a few of the guards.

It is really no different than when I worked my way through the ranks of the cartel, Manny thought. He was a master at manipulating his superiors. They were a means to an end. Then he would be calling the shots again. Right after he took care of a little business from his past, he thought.

“It’ll work, Manny,” Darrel assured in a less than convincing tone, a tone that in the past Manny would have had him killed or at least beaten for, but in his experience, men like Darrel rarely voiced their uncertainness in Manny’s presence. “They let me take the truck out to the work crew before.”

A/N: This was inspired by XNAMASSE’s great picture ‘The Capture’, I hope I’ve done it some justice. The link for the picture can be found in the description. Also I am using the picture with his permission. Now betaed by the great vabvioand.

 “Zev!”
Zevran turned towards the voice shouting his name and felt a smile pulling at his lips as the Warden-Commander walked up to him.
“So is it true? Are you really getting ready to leave?”
Zevran turned from the worried blond-haired mage and leaned against the Keep’s wall before nodding as he studied the countryside.
“I’m afraid so, my friend. This last attack by the Crows came a little too close for my comfort. It’s time I took this battle to them.”
“Zev…”
Turning his head, Zev
Search for the WardenA/N: Before anyone asked, I wrote this in such a way that the reader would be able to picture their warden as the one Zevran is talking/thinking about, if they romanced him or even if they didn't. I may continue this after DAI comes out, especially since I heard that Zevran won't be in the game. This was betaed by the awesome vabvioand.
Disclaimer: I own nothing!
Zevran slowly put down his drink and glared at the man across from him. After the battle at the Kirkwall gallows and once he had made sure that the Champion would be all right, Zevran had left and traveled to a small village to meet one of his contacts. The news that the man had brought him was neither wanted, nor what he was expected to hear.

“What do you mean the Warden is gone?!”

“Just what I said, ser. I went to deliver your letter like we had agreed only to find the entire Keep in an uproar. No one seemed to know why or where the Warden had disappeared to.”

“How lo

Malik beats AltairDisclaimer: I don't own Assassin's Creed.
Malik looked across the rooftops of Jerusalem and seeing no guards gave a sigh of relief. Hearing the faintest of noises behind him, he turned and saw Altair reaching down to pull the lettuce closed and latched it into place. Knowing that the new Rafiq needed time to sort out his new quarters, Malik caught the other’s cowl covered gaze, and jerking his head to the side he took off running. Even missing an arm, Malik still enjoyed the freedom that came from knowing the higher routes of the city, where all he had to worry about was the occasional guard. Turning his head slightly, he could see Altair keeping pace beside him, a soft smile on the newly appointed Grand Master’s face. Feeling an answering smile pulling at his own lips, Malik increased his speed, easily jumping the gaps between the roofs and he soon landed in the walled-off courtyard that the brotherhood used for practice between missions.

KaidanKaidan sat down on his bed and placed his head into his hands. After a moment, he let out a frustrated sigh and jerked to his feet, before he started pacing. He had just seen Shepard again after two years of thinking her dead and now he couldn’t get a hold of his emotions. She was with Cerberus! Why hadn’t she come to him? This had to be all his fault! If he had only…only.
With a yell, he turned and punched the wall, his biotics causing a large dent to appear in the metal. Hearing something hit the floor; he looked down and saw a holopic lying on the ground. Kaidan feel to his knees and after staring at it for a few moments, he reached down and picked it up. Turning to lean against the wall, he softly ran his hand over the image as a deep regret and sadness entered his eyes.
In the picture he stood two years younger, his arm around Shepard’s shoulders, while her arm rest around his waist, her other hand showing a peace sign, smiles showing on both their faces.

FAQ

Mon Jul 7, 2014, 9:24 AM
Taken from Lydia Larue's Official Website, Updated: 9.1.17

1. Will you read my manuscript and help me edit it?

As much as we would love to assist you on your manuscript by editing it, there just isn’t enough time in the day to help you.

The Dark Savior Series is on a deadline, and we need to stick to that deadline. With that in mind, we write one thousand words a day. Most of the time, except one day a week, we spend all day writing. If we answered every request for proof-reading, it would cut into our time writing. We wouldn’t get the Dark Savior Series finished when we wanted. After all, we are authors; we’re not editors.

2. Will you write my manuscript for me?

No, we will not write your manuscript for you. We believe that everyone should do their work.

3.Do you do art trades, requests, or commissions?

We do not do art trades, requests, or commissions at the moment. The reason being is that there is not enough time in the day for that. We are currently working on two trilogies, several stand alone novels, and an epic (12 books).

However, in the future, we might open up requests. It will be one request at a time, however.

4.Can I use your art for random things like forum décor, signatures, avatars?

No. We put too much time into the design of our images to let others use them. Some of the pieces have been commissioned for other artists.

You may draw my characters if you let me know. However, do not claim the characters as your own nor do we allow people to roleplay as them.

5.Can I use your characters in my fanfiction?

Writing fan fiction is a good way to increase one’s technical skill in literature, and we do support those who write it, however, we do not allow any of our characters to be portrayed in another person’s writing. Unless it is a commissioned piece.

6. Do you allow your images to be pinned on Pinterest?

We do allow my images on Pinterest. However, we ask you not to remove the copyright from them. If one does not comply with my request, I will contact Pinterest to take the offending picture down.
